How to Keep a Long Distance Relationship While Studying Abroad?

How do you balance your wanderlust with your romance? How do you keep the spark alive when you're thousands of miles apart? Here are some tips that I've learned from my own experience of being in a long distance relationship while studying abroad.

1. Communicate regularly, but not too much. You want to stay in touch with your partner and share your adventures, but you don't want to be glued to your phone or laptop all the time. Find a schedule that works for both of you, and stick to it. Maybe you can have a video call once a week, and text or voice message throughout the day. But don't feel obligated to reply instantly or report every detail of your day. Leave some room for mystery and excitement.

2. Send each other gifts and surprises. Nothing says "I love you" like a thoughtful gift or a surprise delivery. You can order something online and have it shipped to their address, or you can make something yourself and mail it. It could be something related to your destination, like a souvenir or a local delicacy, or something personal, like a photo album or a playlist. You can also surprise them with flowers, chocolates, or pizza on special occasions, or just because.

3. Plan virtual dates and activities. Just because you're apart doesn't mean you can't have fun together. Thanks to technology, you can still watch movies, play games, listen to music, or even cook together online. You can use apps like Netflix Party, Discord, Spotify, or Zoom to sync your screens and enjoy some quality time together. You can also get creative and try new things, like taking an online course, doing a scavenger hunt, or having a karaoke night.

4. Trust each other and be supportive. One of the biggest challenges of being in a long distance relationship is dealing with jealousy and insecurity. You might wonder what your partner is doing, who they are with, or if they still love you. The best way to overcome these feelings is to trust each other and be supportive of each other's goals and dreams. Don't let your fears ruin your relationship. Instead, focus on the positive aspects of being apart, like having more independence, personal growth, and new experiences.

5. Visit each other if possible. Nothing beats seeing your partner in person after a long time apart. If you have the time and money, try to visit each other at least once during your study abroad program. You can either go to their place, or meet somewhere in between. You can also invite them to visit you and show them around your new city. This will give you a chance to reconnect physically and emotionally, and make some unforgettable memories together.

6. Remember that this is temporary.
No matter how hard it is to be apart, remember that this is not forever. You have an end date in mind, and you're working towards it. Think of this as a test of your love and commitment, and an opportunity to grow as individuals and as a couple. You'll come out stronger and happier than ever before.

Being in a long distance relationship while studying abroad is not easy, but it's not impossible either. With some effort, creativity, and love, you can make it work and have the best of both worlds.
