Review of Bromley Tea Egyptian Chamomile by Tchuggin' Okie
Outside one glitch (below), this was a reasonably good chamomile experience. As often noticed with this herb, the dry and in-cup aromas were weak, but the flavor came out rich, robust and undiluted by any of this tea type's usual flaws like filler use or poor-quality storage of the flower. The taste was a little more bitter than most chamomile teas I've had, but also somewhat buttery or savory—not to the level of McCormick, but still quite good. That is, between swallowing or spitting the material in ...
Review of Choice Organic Teas English Breakfast by Tchuggin' Okie
When I think of what an English Breakfast tea should taste like, after having a few good-quality loose and bagged brands early on, most others have fallen short. However, this one hit the spot right away at a motel, and a few days later at home too, living up to the standard. It left me wanting to try more of both this one and others from the same company. The tea brewed up dark and thick-looking, quickly. The aroma was rather mild, so I expected the usual motel-obtained, bagged EB tea. However, the...
Review of Bromley Tea Tuscan Herbal Lemon by Tchuggin' Okie
Being biased against lemon in general, I was surprised for the better by this tea, for the most part. I expected a sour product, given the flavor, ingredients (lots of lemony stuff and the hibiscus/rose-hips blend seemingly standard for fruit teas). Instead, in both scent and flavor, this presented a smooth, sweet version of lemon with a herbal edge. It was almost enough to turn me on to the possibility that a lemon tea could be quite good. Except... Unfortunately it also tasted a bit antiseptic, an...
Review of Bigelow Tea Benefits Blueberry & Aloe Herbal Tea by Tchuggin' Okie
This tea smells like blueberries (dry and wet). It tastes like a blend of hibiscus, apples and natural blueberry flavor, which are the first three ingredients. In order the other ingredients are: orange peel, rose hips, elderberries, acerola juice granules, licorice root, aloe vera juice concentrate, blueberries. Overall, it reminds me a lot of the Celestial Seasonings "Zinger" line, practically if not nominally including their True Blueberry blend. The Bigelow mashup is a little less tart (good!) and ...
Review of Bromley Tea Temple of Heaven Green Tea by Tchuggin' Okie
Finding a variety of Bromley teas at a Holiday Inn Express in Nebraska, I figured to try a few, both there (which had good water) and on the well water at home. This one was a winner, probably the best motel-obtained green tea I've had, and up there with several decent loose-leaf Chinese green teas. The dry-bag aroma was weak, but the tea's smell and flavor both lit up nicely in-cup. A little bit of experimentation with a few bags showed that steeping this about 3–4 minutes works to bring the flavor...
Review of Upton Tea Imports Sweet Orange Black Tea by Trailesque
This is a pleasant, orange flavored tea. It is made in Germany, like a lot of Upton's flavored and herbal teas are, but I don't know what the base tea is or where it is from. Despite the name, it is not very sweet, and the orange flavoring is fairly low key. It contains some orange peel, and it does smell quite a bit like a glass of orange juice.
Review of Upton Tea Imports Chung-Hao Special Grade Jasmine by Trailesque
This is a lightly smoky, jasmine flavored, dark green tea. The floral flavor is noticeable, but not very strong. It is well-balanced and not bitter, with a hint of ginger flavor. This is a good choice if you want a reasonably priced jasmine tea that is not overly floral.
Review of Upton Tea Imports Chardwar Estate FTGFOP1 Assam Organic by Trailesque
This is a decent, budget-priced Assam. It lacks the full, malty flavor that a first-rate Assam should have, but it is not bad. A little thin and mild, but perfectly drinkable.
Review of Upton Tea Imports Kenilworth Estate OP by Trailesque
This is a smooth, easy to drink Ceylon tea. It is versatile - it goes well with milk or lemon, and it would probably be just fine on ice. The aroma is pleasantly earthy. You can't go wrong by choosing this.
Review of Upton Tea Imports No. 1 Tippy Orthodox GFOP Darjeeling by JGS1122
The aroma has a mild stone fruit scent. The liquor (5 min steep) is reddish brown. Flavor is a pleasing Darjeeling. the tea would be an excellent sip all day. I will move it into my regular rotation.
Review of Nile Valley Teas Hibiscus Mint Tea by Tchuggin' Okie
Overall, this is a great choice for non-caffeinated iced tea, especially if brewed up over a few hours as a sun tea. I got this fine little blend at an H-E-B supermarket in the DFW Metroplex, where several teas reviewed here were purchases that can't be found at any of my usual haunts in Oklahoma. Unlike most teas in similarly sized boxes, these come in a package of 6 big tea bags, each suited for a whole pitcher. So as I'm wont to do, I tossed it into a tall glass tankard, closed it up, sat it out ...
Review of Teekanne Calm & Relax by Tchuggin' Okie
This is a pleasant little herb tea that is probably worth grabbing on sale, but not as tasty as a few of Teekanne's many other offerings. Calm and Relax has a long ingredients roster that reminds me a lot of Traditional Medicinals or Yogi teas: cinnamon, orange leaves, rooibos, licorice, honeybush, chamomile, lemon balm, apple mint, peppermint, lemongrass, hops, and blackberry leaves. That seems like an intriguing blend, especially the hops, which I've never had in a tea before. However, hops is only 5...
Review of Mighty Leaf Tea Marrakesh Mint Tea by Tchuggin' Okie
NOTE: This tea has changed ingredients (and not for the better) since last update on RateTea in 2017. It used to be, "China Gunpowder green tea blended with refreshing Moroccan peppermint," per website of that era. Now it is, "Chinese green tea blended with sweet, bright spearmint," based on the labeling of packaging for the individual sachets. Realizing that balancing a flavoring like mint with green tea is likely a delicately performed blending art, I still had some trouble getting into this blend...
Review of Bigelow Tea Steep English Breakfast Fair Trade Certified Black Tea by Tchuggin' Okie
Surprisingly, this was one of the smoothest and most pleasant flavor experiences I've had with bagged black Ceylon tea, and perhaps Bigelow's best in that category. How much of that resulted from a baseline of lower expectations? Admittedly, most of the "Steep" line hasn't impressed me much, especially considering the negligible difference in taste relative to price for similar non-Steep teas in their portfolio. Regardless, Bigelow should keep the supply line wide open to whatever estate(s) produce this...
Review of Bromley Tea Naturally Decaffeinated Tea by Tchuggin' Okie
Likely, I'll never rate a decaf black tea in the upper 20%, simply because the processes involved usually strip away aroma and flavor and add some sort of unnatural (usually metallic) tinge to the taste. Imagine my surprise, then, when this decaf tasted rather smooth and moderately strong, with only the very faintest and barely detectable rustiness. It also contained a weak but still noticeable fruity element, something like kiwi or starfruit, as well as a hint of damp, fallen autumn leaves. This may be...
Review of Upton Tea Imports Pothotuwa Estate Ceylon Silver Tip by JGS1122
The aroma is sweet, solid Ceylon aroma. The liquor (5 min steep) is a deep brown. Flavor is good, and has a distinct fruit taste ( I get peaches). Overall a good Ceylon. I would add this tea to my regular rotation.
Review of Bigelow Tea Steep Chamomile Citrus Herbal Tea by Tchuggin' Okie
Flavored chamomiles can vary a lot in quality, so I figured going in that this blend would have either too little citrus (lemon), rendering it a meekly flavored chamomile, or so much lemon that the chamomile was a distant whisper. Amazingly, they were well-balanced! This was especially true in the aromas, which were remarkably consistent from dry bag to cup to wet bag. However (ain't there always a "however," however?)... My main and nontrivial disappointment with this tea was its overall flavor weak...
Review of Upton Tea Imports Whisky Barrel Smoked Japanese- Cherrywood by JGS1122
Strong smoky aroma. The liquor (5 min steep) is a brownish red. There are cherry notes that linger as an after taste. This tea might be a good pairing with dessert. I would use it for all day sipping.
Review of Mighty Leaf Tea Earl Grey Decaf by Tchuggin' Okie
Here's another Mighty Leaf blend I got included in a hotel stay, but I'm basing the (way overpriced) value rating on the online cost, over 50¢/bag in 100-ct bulk box! Even for a really good decaf tea, that's probably too steep to steep for most folks, unless one is so desperate for a very good decaf EG that such a large payout is worth the trouble. For a decaf black tea, this Ceylon tea (per their website) is remarkably good, via both smell and taste. It doesn't have the tinny or metallic tone I get...
Review of Bigelow Tea Steep Organic Green Tea & Pomegranate by Tchuggin' Okie
Somehow, with the "organic" promotional pump and the higher cost, I expected this tea to improve upon the non-organic Bigelow version that doesn't have the "Steep" name attached. Instead, I rated it 20 points lower, with the "value" as overpriced. It costs more than the "normal" pomegranate-flavored green tea from Bigelow, but has a weaker aroma and weaker hot taste. Though likely unintended by its makers, "Steep" in this case describes the relative cost as much as how to prepare the beverage. The a...
Review of TWG Tea Crème Caramel Tea by Tchuggin' Okie
From my first sniff of this tea in TWG's Bangkok shop to the latest chug, I'm struck by the strong resemblance of this flavored rooibos to Murchie's "Cozy Caramel Rooibos." Both use high-quality rooibos with suitably strong flavorings (in this case, as described on TWG's website, "a secret TWG Tea blend of sweet French spices") to achieve much the same effect. The brew ends up a rich deep tan-red, clear, sweet and delicious! The main differences here are twofold: * A substantial element of French va...
Review of Simpson & Vail Vietnam Black Tea by JGS1122
The aroma has a pleasant fruitiness. The liquor (5 minute steep) is a medium brown. The flavor is mild, and tasty, with a slight sweet after taste. Would be good as a base for a blended tea. Tasty.
Review of Mighty Leaf Tea Organic Darjeeling Estate by Tchuggin' Okie
Finally, after trying several Darjeeling teas, I think I've finally found one that expresses how they're supposed to taste. Most of them, in my relatively limited experience so far, have been "off" in some way: flat, or metallic, or weak, or muddy, or "old" tasting, or just ordinary and nothing special (like a lot of motel food-service teas). Given their high repute, I was starting to wonder if Darjeeling-appreciation buds are simply missing from my tongue and this tea type won't work for me, or if I've...
Review of ITO EN Oi Ocha Green Tea by Tchuggin' Okie
ITO EN's Oi Ocha has become my favorite straight Japanese green tea pretty quickly. It was one of my favorites of several teas in my daughter's pantry in Bangkok, on decent water (reverse-osmosis filtration of the otherwise risky city tap water), and seems even better on my mineralized but filtered well water at home. The dry-bag aroma is predictably ricey, slightly vegetal and slightly grassy, but well-balanced. The tea brews up a light yellow if hot-steeped the wrapper-recommended 30 seconds, but I ...
Review of Tazo Tea Regenerative Organic Darjeeling by Tchuggin' Okie
For starters, I don't know the current availability status of this tea, or if it is the same as the original Tazo Darjeeling, which was not called "Regenerative Organic" and which has been retired for several years, at least. It apparently made a comeback or new beginning in this form, and clearly is in contemporary Tazo packaging, but is either: 1. Food-service only (how I got it, at a conference in the Kansas City suburbs), or 2. Retail, but somehow out of stock at the same time at every online stor...

Aged White Tea and Silver Teaware Comparison
During the 2024 Cascadia Tea Festival, I did 20-minute aged white tea tasting in silver teaware. I had hypothesized that silver could greatly change the taste of aged white tea, potentially for the better. For the comparison, I used my seasoned clay teapot dedicated to aged white vs my persimmon silver teapot – both similar in size. For those who couldn’t make it to the Seattle area, I did a tasting by myself to check the theory. Note, I did not use these teas in the festival tasting. For that, I used an assortment of white teas from 2008 to… Continue reading, hoot!

Owl’s New Silver Teapot from Yunnan Sourcing
Years back, I borrowed two silver teapots. With those pots, I did plenty of testing to see what teas tasted best in silver teapots. Eventually, I returned those teapots and made do with a silver tea cup and my silver gaiwan. Thankfully, silver teacups also influence the tea’s taste. I never bought my very own silver teapot as they tend to be: Yunnan Sourcing finally dropped some small silver teapots in the 50ml to 100ml range. In the past, they have had plenty of 120ml, but that is still too big for me. I quickly sniped a 100ml Persimmon Silver… Continue reading, hoot!

Roasted Matcha and Mochi Muffins from Third Culture Bakery
Continuing my previous review of Third Culture Bakery teas, today we have Roasted Matcha! Isn’t Roasted Matcha just Hojicha Powder? Hojicha is made from roasted Sencha or Bancha. Matcha is made with Tencha, which is specifically grown for Matcha. That said, this is a Roasted Tencha Matcha. I can understand why I haven’t had Roasted Matcha, it isn’t as common and search results confuse it with Hojicha. Matcha Powder and Preparation The smell is closer to cutting hardwood than roast. Jasmine Tea Sampler from iTeaworld
iTeaworld has been knocking on my owl house for months for a review. I figured other writers had it covered. However, iTeaworld approached me with a Jasmine Tea Sampler that I’d never seen before – four jasmine teas with different levels of scenting. This is educational, but also interesting as not too often tea vendors cite how much scenting is done. Even though I don’t like green tea I want to experience the jasmine levels. A good jasmine (or any floral tea) tea is scented with fresh flowers over time. I often see jasmine teas getting their floral essence from… Continue reading, hoot!

Brigadoon Tea from Adagio Teas
Breakfast teas have made a comeback in my tea drinking. My work schedule is just too busy to gongfu. Lazy style just gets over brewed. I have time for a 3pm pick me up with tea and a biscuit. I’ve heard about Adagio’s Brigadoon Tea from others, but never got it as it is sold only on February 29th, so only 1 day every 4 years. I reliably get suckered by limited edition things. Adagio kindly sent me a tin of Brigadoon early. So what’s up with Brigadoon? This tea is named after a Scottish legend of an enchanted town… Continue reading, hoot!

Red and Honey Bug Bite Oolong from Third Culture Bakery
Today’s oolongs are from Third Culture Bakery – a brick-and-mortar California shop known for its Mochi Muffins! It is awesome to see a cafe carrying good tea, but also the ability to purchase online. The sourcing of these oolongs is a 3rd generation farm in Luye Valley of Southern Taiwan, which is 20 minutes from the Third Culture Bakery owner’s mother’s house! Red Oolong from Third Culture Bakery At this time, Third Culture Bakery sells their oolong in compostable tea bags. Each bag has 3 grams of leaf, which is awesome for flavorful tea. Aozora Matcha from Naoki Matcha
Today’s tea is a Single-origin organic Matcha from the Isagawa region of Shizuoka, Japan – Naoki Matcha’s Aozora Matcha. I’ve had a couple of Naoki Matcha’s Master Collection, the most recent one being Mame Matcha, and they are fantastic. The powder smells fantastic! It is sweet and grassy with a vibrant green hue. It is recommended that this matcha be sifted first and to use 65c / 150F water. I failed both. I used a paste method, adding a little water and whisking till smooth, then slowly topping up with 71c/ 160F water. Aozora Matcha whisked up fantastic and thick,… Continue reading, hoot!
